 ACMS 2016 Conductor Guidlines:

I want to express sincere thanks for your willingness to serve as this year's All-City Middle School conductors as this performance will showcase the talents and dedication of many hundreds of music students and teachers throughout the city!

As you begin planning and preparation, I wanted to share some information, guidelines, and timelines with regards to repertoire and rehearsals, developed with consideration and experiences from previous festivals.

• Your entire program should be 20 to 25 minutes playing time, including transitions between pieces (10 - 15 minutes for the Jazz Band). It should include music of varying styles, dynamics, tempos, and keys. Arrangements should be on a level 2 to 3 1/2 (Medium Easy - Medium).

• The audition pieces will be included in the program on a four year rotation.  This year’s selections are Russian Sailors’ Dance (Band) and Sinfonia in F (Strings).

• A library of ACMS-appropriate band and string repertoire is available at Austin Meehan Middle School, 3001 Ryan Ave.,19152. Please contact Joe Krammer at 267-973-9549 in order to make arrangements to access it. You may also submit other published pieces for consideration as program choices. (Unfortunately, there is no budget to reimburse you for the purchase of music!)

 • Joe Krammer will be in charge of making practice and folder copies of your music, and arrange for distribution of practice copies to teachers and students.

*****Please drop off your proposed program selections to Austin Meehan for  approval no later than Monday, September 25, 2016. Please include a list of your selections, with composers/arrangers and performance times  Please also email links to recordings of your repertoire to me and to Joe Krammer by that date.

• Please keep in mind at all times that the rehearsal experience for students is equally as important as the final performance!

• Prepare rehearsal schedules to make the most effective use of time and to ensure equally balancing attention to all pieces.  Time flies when you’re having fun (or frustrated!)

All City is a team effort!  Please maintain a positive, united, and professional working atmosphere with committee members/colleagues.  Frustrations may arise but feel free to excuse yourself from the podium to discuss concerns with me or the Coordinator in charge, and allow us to address issues with other staff members.  Any policy, planning and logistical decisions will be made by me and/or the Coordinators.

In general, utilize effectively planned instructional practices, performance based assessment strategies, consultation and collaboration with peers, and positive reinforcement to make each rehearsal an enjoyable educational experience.

If you can think of anything else that you need in order to make your rehearsals run more smoothly (e.g., conducting chair, microphone & speaker, etc.), please let Joe Krammer know of your needs. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions at any point.

I am sure this will be a rewarding experience for both you and the ACMS students, and am confident that the performances of all groups will be excellent. Once again, congratulations and many thanks for contributing your time and talents to make this year's All-City Middle School program possible!
